This recording of the Orchestra Libera Classica (OLC)’s 42nd Regular Concert features Haydn’s “Drum Roll” and “Drum Mass,” both of which showcase the timpani to great effect! The performance features OLC, led by Hidemi Suzuki, Coro Libero Classico (CLC), and a lineup of accomplished soloists! Symphony No. 103, “The Drum Roll,” begins with a series of timpani strikes in the introduction. Timpanist Jun Sugawara delivers a dynamic performance that highlights the charm of this distinctive work. Another highlight is the prominent role of the clarinet in the trio of the third movement’s minuet. Furthermore, the horn fanfare at the beginning of the final movement also conveys the work’s splendor. The Mass in C Major, Hob. XXII:9, “War Mass,” commonly known as the “Drum Mass,” is another work in which the timpani are used to great effect. It is a Mass in which a devout atmosphere blends with the atmosphere of war. The chorus will be performed by Coro Libero Classico (CLC), a group founded by early music specialists—primarily members of the vocal ensemble “La Fonteverde.” The soloists include a lineup of accomplished singers, led by soprano Saki Nakae—who has garnered attention for her overwhelming vocal power—along with alto Naoko Fuse, tenor Yosuke Taniguchi, and bass Miki Ogasawara. The album includes a bilingual lyric translation.
