The program features the overture to Meyuer’s opera “Stratonis,” Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 94, “The Surprise”! Étienne-Nicolas Meyeur (1763–1817) was a French composer who was primarily active in opera. “Stratonice” was composed in 1792, the same year as Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony. Be sure to pay attention to the cadenza in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, featuring Shunsuke Sato. Shunsuke Sato performs a cadenza by Ferdinand David—the violinist known for having been entrusted with the premiere of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor—with a few minor adjustments made by Sato himself. Shunsuke Sato delivers an overwhelming performance with his masterful technique and truly eloquent expressiveness—a masterful rendition that reveals new charms in this work! Next up is Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony. The OLC, led by Hidemi Suzuki, delivers a splendid performance of this famously dramatic piece, in which the full orchestra—including the timpani—suddenly bursts forth in the second movement!
