With the addition of his early Symphony No. 4 and Symphony No. 87, the excitement of the Parisian audience is brought to life here. This is a vibrant and exquisite live recording, a hallmark of the OLC, whose repertoire centers on Haydn. “Although Haydn never visited Paris, his works began to gain recognition as early as the 1770s and appear to have been quite popular by the 1780s. The “Concert Spirituel” series, which ran from 1725 to 1790, was a major institution in Parisian musical life; of the 335 concerts held between 1781 and 1790, Haydn’s works were featured in 191 of them, and from 1785 onward, it was not uncommon for at least one of his works to be performed. According to my count, Mozart’s works were performed only seven times during the same period (from Hidemi Suzuki’s liner notes).” King International
