The second release on Yasuji Ohagi's own label, and the solo album many have been waiting for Villa-Lobos as only Ohagi can play it at this moment in his career Guitar works by Brazil's great composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). Alongside complete recordings of the Suite populaire brésilienne and the Twelve Études, the programme includes the Valsa-Chôro rediscovered in 2005, the Chôros No. 1, and Melodia sentimental (in an arrangement for solo guitar) from the suite Floresta do Amazonas, the work for voice and orchestra written in the composer's final years. A wholehearted disc in pursuit of an expression that only the player he is today could achieve. Yasuji Ohagi, guitar Ohagi studied at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Italy. His teachers were Hiroshi Hagiwara, Yoshihisa Nakano (Forest Hill Music Academy), Shin-ichi Fukuda, Olivier Chassain and Oscar Ghiglia. In 1998 he won second prize and the special jury prize at the Havana International Guitar Competition, and in 2000 made his CD debut on Victor Entertainment. He first appeared at the Kennedy Center in Washington in 2003, and in 2005 became the first Japanese classical guitarist to take part in CUBADISCO. He toured five Canadian cities in 2010 under the auspices of the Japan Foundation, and in 2015 joined the Saito Kinen Orchestra at the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival for Berlioz's Béatrice et Bénédict. In his self-produced series "Guitar and Voice" at Hakuju Hall he gave the complete Platero y yo of Castelnuovo-Tedesco with Mutsumi Hatano (2016), and the world premiere of Atsuhiko Gondai's "Love and Death" with Vox humana (2017). He has appeared at the Kirishima International Music Festival, the Miyazaki International Music Festival and La Folle Journée TOKYO, among others. Since 2000 he has released more than twenty CDs and two DVDs, recent titles including Shin-ichiro Ikebe: Chamber Works III, Travelogue with cellist Dai Miyata, DUO2 with the guitarists Kiyoshi Shomura, Shin-ichi Fukuda and Daisuke Suzuki, Cantilene with oboist Tomoyuki Hirota, and DOTS AND LINES with flautist Seiichiro Edo. He is a recipient of the 6th Hotel Okura Music Award and the 18th Idemitsu Music Award, and is a visiting professor at the Osaka College of Music and the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.
