Otaken's latest reissue of Walter's Schubert This time, the Osaka issue of the LP reissue of the untranslated needle LPs is Walter's "Unfinished" & "The Great". It is no exaggeration to say that Walter has been restored in stereo with the best sound quality ever. The LP reissue of Walter's "Unfinished" & "The Great" is the best ever in stereo, with an astonishing dynamic range, full low midrange, velvety violins, richly toned and clearly localized wind instruments, and powerful, tight timpani. Furthermore, there is no emphasis on any particular frequency band, and the sound is powerful but never noisy. In addition, some previously hidden sound patterns can be heard, and various new discoveries can be made.If the recording had been played with this sound from the beginning, Walter's reputation for stereo recordings would have been even higher. As for the performance, Walter's "The Great" is a masterpiece that some musicians would surely select as "the best one" if they were to come together and listen to it. However, one's evaluation of the performance depends on what one is looking for in this piece. If you are looking for Germanic construction, Furtwängler or Böhm would be the best choice, and if you are looking for Viennese singing, Walter would be the best choice. However, it is noteworthy that the reissue of this piece has revealed not only Schubert's singing spirit, but also his deepest human emotions.In that sense, Schumann's description of this piece as "heavenly" does not apply to this performance, if that is what he meant literally.
