For frontman George Takahashi, a native of Miyagi Prefecture—one of the disaster-stricken areas—these years have been a time of ceaseless prayer for reconstruction. A strong impulse to “revitalize my hometown of Tohoku, and all of Japan, right now” gave birth to this song, “Showa Showa Ondo.” Reviving the “Connection” That Is Slipping Away—In the Showa era, there were communities where people naturally gathered and supported one another, much like at a Bon dance. In contrast to today’s society, marked by a declining birthrate and increasing isolation, Takahashi quietly poses a question in a spoken interlude midway through the song. Through the vibrant scenes of the Showa era, he reminds us today of the beauty of warm human connections forged through music. The Soul of Japan! Bon Odori! “Sing and Dance!” Toward a Future Without Division—“Tears of sorrow turn the world to darkness; the more you smile, the brighter the world becomes.” On a festival night, once you join the circle of Bon Odori dancers gathered around the yagura, age, gender, and social status no longer matter. In this “era of division,” where it’s all too easy to erect walls between people on social media and elsewhere, this song serves as the “Reiwa-era national festival anthem” to inspire a wounded Japan and help us reclaim heartfelt connections once again.
