A collection of live recordings from April 1982 in Strasbourg, France, by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, the prestigious jazz band led by Art Blakey, one of the most influential drummers in modern jazz. This release features previously unreleased material, carefully preserved by the Blakey family and taken from the original master tapes. Mastered at Gearbox's all-tube Future Analog Studio in London, it is presented as a double gatefold CD. This is the earliest full-length live recording of the Messengers in the Blanchard/Harrison lineup, a configuration that would define the band for years to come and propel the Young Lions movement from mere revivalism into more profound territory. At 62, Blakey never mellowed with age. Rather, he poured even more energy into his mission. "You go to school to get your diploma," he once said. "You come with me to get an education." Strasbourg '82 is precisely that education in progress. It is a raw, unfiltered record of the very moment the university was being rebuilt.
