As this momentum spread across the country, censorship was lifted and freedom of speech was granted. Just as the people believed the “Prague Spring” had finally arrived, the Soviet Union led Warsaw Pact forces in an invasion of Czechoslovakia. The troops seized control of the radio station—the largest media outlet at the time—and attempted to broadcast a false report claiming that “the Soviet Union had come to rescue the Czechoslovak people.” However, the station’s journalists stood up to the authorities and the tanks, making full use of their technical expertise to continue broadcasting the truth from outside the station and keep the citizens’ spirits high.
