Produced by up-and-coming jazz pianist Yasumasa Kumagai, the album features some of the J-Jazz scene’s leading musicians: Kahei Nakabayashi (bass), Masahisa Kanou (drums), and Naoto Suzuki (guitar). This ambitious work deeply roots the essence of “Kōuta”—a genre of traditional music accompanied by the shamisen—into modern jazz. The sound masterfully fuses traditional Japanese melodies with harmonies reminiscent of Robert Glasper. The vocals seek to express the beauty of Japan, singing of the changing seasons from early spring to winter. Songs that retain the melodies of kōuta, boldly reimagined arrangements, and original compositions inspired by kōuta coexist vividly. The album features a lineup of intriguing tracks, including “Saka wa Teruteru,” which revives a kōuta based on a 300-year-old “umako-uta” (carter’s song) with a modern beat; “Ume Ichirin,” “Hatsuyuki ni,” and “Mukojima Meisho,” where the shamisen accompaniment is faithfully reproduced on bass; and “Mushi no Oto” and “Chiru wa Ukki,” which incorporate rap. A one-of-a-kind crossover album that delivers a high-quality musical experience has been born. Includes a 16-page booklet to savor the lyrics.
