Description:
Soprano Desi Halban is the subject of the latest issue of Record Art. Born in Vienna, she was a close friend of Walter's from an early age. After marrying a Jewish Dutchman who was an art dealer, she was forced to leave for the U.S. by the Nazis. Walter saved her from a disappointment and often used her as the soloist in Mahler's Symphony No. 4. He also made a famous studio recording for Columbia (1945). Halban's voice is characterized by a lovely high quality, like that of a Hollywood actress of the time, and is one word that describes her charm. The combination of Walter and the Boston Symphony Orchestra is also rare. The venue is Providence (capital of Rhode Island), about an hour's drive from Boston. The Boston Symphony Orchestra often gave concerts there. This recording is a masterful performance full of vitality, which is different from the transcendental mastery of Walter's later years in 1947 and the aggressive side of his younger days.
