Becca Stevens & Elan Mehler,Becca Stevens

Description:

Following "Becca Stevens & the Atasca Quartet," Becca's new album for the second month in a row is a duo album with her old friend Eran Mehler (p). It is an overwhelming and moving album featuring Great American Songbook, folk, blues, and more. Rarely have Becca's "songs" and "voice" been so fully expressed in this album, and Eran's piano, influenced by Bill Evans and Paul Bley, harmonizes beautifully and fantastically with the songs. Ilan is a New York-based pianist/composer and co-founder of Newvelle Records, a French analog label (2016-). The label is also active in Brooklyn, and this is the label's first distributed album. The recording of this album was not originally scheduled for release in September 2019, but it was so great that the decision was made to release it just for distribution. The physical version of the album will be released only in Japan. Becca and Eran have been working together since 2009 on Eran's album "The After Suite".The idea for this album came from a performance of the album on the U.S. and European tours, as well as an intensive session in Switzerland, where Ealan was living, with Becca, where Ealan was again amazed by Becca's interpretation of standards and the range of her voice. The idea for this album was born. About 10 years later, a project called Newvelle Recording Sessions was realized within the label, and as part of the project, a chance encounter between the two was realized. The opening track is from "Time: The Revelator" (2001), a masterpiece that Gillian Welch and her partner David Rawlings created together. The final song on the album is a blues song that many musicians have taken up in various styles, and this is also based on the version sung by Gillian Welch on "Soul Journey" (2003). Sandwiched between these is a repertoire of composers who form the Great American Songbook, including Gershwin, Ellington, Jimmy Van Heusen, and Peter DeRose.
