Description:
Chris Struckwitz (1931- ), founder of Arfrey Records, has discovered countless fascinating American roots music. In 1960, he discovered a gospel preacher in Louisiana named Levalland Lewis Overstreet. Two years after his discovery, in 1962, Strackwitz tracked him down and rediscovered him preaching at an association in Phoenix, Arizona. There, he field-recorded a gospel performance he and four boys in the chorus were giving. Of special note is the perfect balance between the soulful calls of Levarando Lewis Overstreet's droning voice and the boys' clear singing response, Levarando's multi-layered hands and feet on bass drum and guitar, and the audience's hand-clapping! The recording is in excellent condition, vividly conveying the audience's hand-clapping, foot-clapping, and enthusiasm. In addition to the live performance at the church, the second half of this album includes a solo performance that Levalland gave at his home.In contrast to the power playing of the first half of the album, the second half is full of his bluesy guitar playing and emotional and tasteful singing. A must have for all soul, blues and R&B fans!
