Junko Urayama, a Steinway Artist who was active for many years in London before returning to Japan, has long regarded this work as her life’s work. This year, marking the 100th anniversary of composer Toshio Kashiwagi’s birth, she is finally releasing it! Junko Urayama—a top artist who loves Steinway pianos, deliberately chooses to play them on concert stages around the world, and is recognized as one of the artists who have left an indelible mark on the history of piano performance—was named a Steinway Artist during her time performing in London. She subsequently “re-imported” her career back to Japan in 2005 and has been engaged in a wide range of activities ever since. After a long period living abroad, she had a fateful encounter with this “Whimsical Paraphrase on Basho’s ‘Oku no Hosomichi.’” For Urayama, a native of Tohoku, this work served as a reminder of her roots—both as a Japanese person and as someone from Tohoku—and she has since embraced it as her life’s work, performing it repeatedly. This year, marking the 100th anniversary of composer Toshio Kashiwagi’s birth, he has finally released the long-awaited CD featuring a complete recording of the work. Muse Entertainment
