Needless to say, an orchestra’s sound and tonal character change depending on the conductor. In the late 1990s, the NHK Symphony Orchestra—which had previously relied on German-style conductors—welcomed Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit, who specialized in French music, and completely transformed its sound. The same is true for wind ensembles. For the Siena Wind Orchestra, now at the height of its popularity, this marked their first collaboration with Fumiaki Miyamoto. What set Miyamoto apart from Siena’s previous conductors was that, until about five years ago, he was a “wind instrument (oboe) player” himself. Wind orchestras are ensembles centered around wind instruments. This means the conductor and the performers are both professionals in the same genre. For example, listen to the trio (middle section) of “Pomp and Circumstance” No. 1 on this album. It is performed at a very leisurely tempo, with great care. For the Siena Wind Orchestra, which typically excels at high-energy performances, this is an unusual sound (it’s a tempo at which an amateur band would quickly run out of breath and fall apart). It seems that precisely because Miyamoto is a wind instrument player himself, he fully understands just how far he can push the ensemble. In that sense, while this first collaboration is a partnership, it also feels as though seasoned professionals are enjoying a friendly test of their skills. I imagine many wind ensemble fans were surprised to see Fumiaki Miyamoto conducting such a classic piece. Just what kind of sound will unfold?
