This is the fourth new recording from Spice of Life by the Hod O'Brien Trio, the American jazz giant who has been called "the greatest bop pianist of our time" and "the master of bebop piano," and who turned 75 on January 19, 2011. This time the recording was made in Virginia, where he currently resides, with musicians who are in tune with each other, creating an at-home, relaxed atmosphere, but with an energetic performance that belies their age. The supporting bassist is Michael Hawkins, born in Washington, DC, and currently living and working in Richmond, Va. He is a talented player who has supported Eric Alexander, Mulgrew Miller, and the Cyrus Chestnut Trio, among others. Billy Williams on drums is a Virginia native and a promising young drummer who has honed his skills with Benny Golson, the Cyrus Chesnutt Trio, and the Larry Virus Trio. Hod's beloved wife, Stephanie Nakasian, will join the band as a guest singer, making the album even more spectacular and enjoyable.She released her debut CD in Japan, "I Love You" (SOL SV-0004), in July 2006, and like Hod, she is popular for her driving vocals. As the title of this CD suggests, "If You Don't Swing, It's Meaningless" conveys the true appeal of swinging jazz through groove-filled compositions that were once favored by bebop giants such as Bud Powell. The final piece, "Dewa Nochi Hodo," is titled after a favorite phrase Hodo learned from a friend when he visited Japan. He and Stephanie make a delightful duo.
