There is one figure who is indispensable to any discussion of modern violin performance: Joseph Joachim, the 19th-century German violinist and great teacher. As the first director of the Berlin Higher School of Music, Joachim nurtured numerous renowned musicians throughout his lifetime and maintained close friendships with many famous composers, including his close ally Brahms. This CD features all five of the extremely rare historical recordings made by Joachim in 1903. The bonus tracks include a total of eight tracks featuring recordings by Joachim’s direct students—Gregorovich and Havemann—as well as Hubay, who also mentored many renowned musicians. 1–5. At Sherman, we use phonographs (mechanical playback devices) to play SP records, thereby preserving their unique live feel, and we are committed to reproducing the “authentic sound” inherent in each record. Furthermore, we do not apply any equalization processing—such as noise reduction—during the mastering process or at any other stage.
