This is a reissue CD series featuring SP records played on a special phonograph, the “HOTOGY95,” and recorded with a 1-bit DSD recorder via a stereo microphone. This release features J.S. Bach’s *The Art of Fugue*, performed by Hermann Diner and his ensemble, Collegium Musicum. The SP records used are one of the very few sets recorded between 1936 and 1937—before World War II—as a string ensemble version of *The Art of Fugue*. They include Contrapunctus 1 through 13, the unfinished fugue, and four canons. The leader, Hermann Diner (1897–1955), was a German-born music educator and violinist who also published his own critically edited edition of *The Art of Fugue*. While some details of Diner’s career remain unclear, he is supported by his co-author Charlotte Hampe (viola) and Paul Grünmer (viola da gamba), a member of the early Busch Quartet. From these historic recordings—which are now extremely difficult to obtain—masterpieces by maestros still celebrated in the classical music world today are played back on a one-of-a-kind phonograph and recorded using a 1-bit DSD recorder via stereo microphones. This process brings back to life the vibrant character inherent in SP records.
