In the seventeenth century the toccata was played at the beginning of Mass and other liturgical services, sometimes taking on the role of a fanfare. Marie Nishiyama commands not only keyboard instruments such as the organ and harpsichord but also plucked instruments such as the harp; she has a repertoire of medieval and Renaissance music from before Bach; and she has performed toccatas in practice, both improvised and within seventeenth-century sacred music. The perspective that only she could bring is one filled with living lines of sound and powerful resonance.
