Description:
The Ondes Martenot is an electronic musical instrument invented in France in 1928. It was created by Maurice Martenot (1898–1980), a cellist and electrical engineer. It is considered one of the world’s oldest electronic musical instruments. As a sophisticated instrument that allows each performer to create their own unique musical expression, it has been embraced by musicians from France and around the world to this day. Numerous works of significance in 20th-century music history were created with this instrument, including compositions by Olivier Messiaen, André Jolivet, Darius Milhaud, and Arthur Honegger. For this SACD, a unique microphone arrangement was devised to capture the way sound radiates from the Ondes Martenot’s speakers. The result is a sound with a sense of depth—from a clear sound image that feels as though you are touching the instrument itself, to the spatial positioning of the instruments spread across the stage, and even the paths the sound takes as it permeates the hall—all rendered in SACD surround sound.
