Description:
Colonna was a composer and organist in 17th century Italy. His father was an organ builder, and Colonna learned organ playing and organ building skills at an early age. He worked as an organist at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, and was also known as the best organ builder of his time, building organs for the noble houses of his time. Most of his works were also religious works, including motets and psalms, and the Holy Roman Emperor at the time, Leopold I (who was also a brilliant composer), valued Colonna's works so much that he had them all transcribed. Eighty-three of these works are still in the collection of the Austrian Library as of 2018. The "Religious Lamentations for Holy Week" is one such work, an imposing piece of music that offers a glimpse into Colonna's style, which was also an influence on Carissimi. Naxos Japan
