Description:
Schoenberg himself wrote the libretto for "Moses and Aaron" based on chapters 3, 4, and 32 of the Old Testament book of Exodus. Originally conceived as a cantata, "Moses and the Burning Bush," the work underwent various changes before finally being composed as an opera in three acts: Act I was completed in 1931, and Act II the following year in 1932, but while sketching Act III, he emigrated to the United States due to Nazi persecution. Schoenberg's direction for Act III changed accordingly, and after much hesitation, he worked on Act III until the end of his life, but in the end, he passed away without completing it. The entire work is written using the twelve-tone technique, making it very difficult to perform. It is also very demanding on the listener, requiring a great deal of tension and concentration. In addition, Castellucci's direction is very bold and difficult to understand, especially the symbolism of the naked woman on the stage with futuristic devices, the bull covered with black ink, and the man tied up with a video tape. However, by repeatedly watching this magnificent and poetic film, you will be able to see the whole picture, including the inorganic beauty of the music spun by Jordan. Naxos Japan
