Queen Elizabeth’s most trusted aide, Robert Devereux, is currently on trial for treason. Sarah, the Duchess of Nottingham—his former lover and now his friend—secures special permission from the Queen for an audience with Robert and learns that he is plotting to flee. Despite the Duke of Nottingham’s desperate pleas on his behalf, Robert is sentenced to death; however, the Duke, who has not yet given up hope, protests the verdict to the Queen. However, the Duke’s attention is drawn to a shawl Robert was carrying. It belonged to his wife, Sarah, and convinced of Sarah and Robert’s infidelity, the Duke withdraws his objection, allowing the Queen to sign the death warrant… The Queen, who truly did not want to hand down the death sentence. The Duke, torn by conflicting emotions; Sarah, insisting on her innocence; and Roberto, desiring an honorable death—by the time the truth came to light, it was already too late. Roberto’s sentence had already been carried out. Mariella Devia, who sang the role of Elizabeth with passion at the Royal Opera House in Madrid in 2015, presents a “different approach” here at the Carlo Felice Theater, featuring an entirely different production and cast. While the production in Madrid featured simple sets and costumes, here the story unfolds in a lavish atmosphere more faithful to historical reality. Additionally, the key role of Sarah, Duchess of Nottingham, is sung by veteran Sonia Ganassi. She masterfully portrayed this challenging role—a woman who obeys the queen for her husband’s sake, yet becomes entangled in a love triangle and is branded an adulteress—earning a standing ovation. The title role is played by the young tenor Stefan Pop. Born in Romania in 1987, he is a rising star who is steadily expanding the scope of his career.
