Lyudmila, daughter of the Grand Duke of Kiev, was kidnapped by the devil at her wedding to the knight Ruslan. The Grand Duke orders his men to search for her and promises to "give half the kingdom and his daughter to the one who brings her back. Ruslan, of course, gives his name, but others follow, including the prince of Hazard and the Norman knights, and the three of them set out to find Ludmilla. The story becomes a muddled mess, with witches getting in the way and a white magician helping them...." The father of modern Russian music, Glinka (1804-1857), presents his masterpiece "Ruslan and Lyudmila" in its entirety on film. We often hear the heroic overture, but rarely see the complete opera, or even know what the story is about. The Bolshoi Theatre is very fond of this production, and it has been a very long-running hit, having been staged more than 700 times in nine different productions. In this new production, staged after the Bolshoi Theater's 2011 renovation, two giant screens on either side of the stage allow the characters to move back and forth between the 19th and 21st centuries, and Yurovsky's dynamic direction brings this fairy tale-like story to life in exquisite detail.
