Juliet is played by the beautiful Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze. At the 2008 Salzburg Festival, Machaidze stepped in for Anna Netrebko, who had to withdraw due to pregnancy, and sang the role of Juliet to great acclaim, instantly making her name known internationally. Juliet is, so to speak, the role that launched her career. In this Verona performance three years later, Machaize exudes the full charm of a young, dynamic singer at the peak of her career. Stefano Secco, who plays Romeo, is now widely regarded as one of the most promising tenors in the Italian opera world. Secco’s singing—passionate yet sweet, while maintaining restraint and never faltering—is magnificent and full of elegance, even in French opera. The beauty of his high notes, in particular, is exquisite. Stefano’s Khetevane Kemoklize is a mezzo-soprano born in Tbilisi, Georgia, just like Machaidze. Although she is a young artist who has been performing for less than 10 years, she is already active in a wide range of venues. Stefano is a role she excels at, having sung it for her debut at the Royal Opera House in the fall of 2010. Conductor Fabio Mastrangelo was born in 1965 in Bari, southern Italy. In recent years, he has been active in Russia, serving as chief conductor of the Yekaterinburg Ballet and Opera Theater and, since 2007, as principal guest conductor of the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra. He also frequently appears as a guest conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre. Of course, he is also highly active as an opera conductor in Italy, and in this video, he receives a warm welcome from the Arena audience the moment he steps into the orchestra pit. Director Francesco Micheli was born in Bergamo in 1972. He is a highly popular director in recent years. By placing a fan-shaped framework on stage (divided into two parts to symbolize the conflict between the two families) and making creative use of various props, he has succeeded in creating a modern and vibrant production even on the vast Arena stage. The beauty of the color palette is also particularly noteworthy. Although this is a recording of an outdoor performance, the video quality is quite excellent; on the Blu-ray Disc, in particular, you can almost feel the summer night air of Verona.
