Turandot from the Arena di Verona Franco Zeffirelli's lavish staging with costumes by Emi Wada, in superb video - and with Japanese subtitles A Turandot that preserves the magnificent singing of Salvatore Licitra, the tenor who died suddenly just before a scheduled visit to Japan. Recorded live at the Arena di Verona in the summer of 2010. Licitra was taken up by Riccardo Muti at La Scala soon after his debut and went on to worldwide success; born in 1968, he died just as he was approaching his prime. Calaf, a role he had made very much his own in his last years, suits him ideally: passionate and powerful, yet with a real sweetness in the tone. Often called "the new Pavarotti", he brings to "Nessun dorma" a delicacy quite different from Pavarotti's grand manner, and the spirit with which he responds to the ovation with an encore is genuinely moving. Turandot is Maria Guleghina, acclaimed today as the specialist in the role, whose enormous voice fills the vast open-air space. Liù is the Georgian soprano Tamar Iveri, who has sung Desdemona in Otello three times in Japan - with the Polish National Opera, La Scala and the New National Theatre, Tokyo - to great acclaim; here she sings with a concentrated beauty of tone and real pathos. Timur is the Brazilian bass Luiz-Ottavio Faria, hardly a household name but the owner of a remarkably imposing voice. The conductor is the veteran Italian opera specialist Giuliano Carella. In the huge Arena, where a conductor's skill is truly tested, he shapes the music with a solidity one would scarcely expect from an open-air performance. There are other recordings of Franco Zeffirelli's Turandot, but this production, which fills the vast space of the Arena di Verona with spectacle, is something special. With costumes by Emi Wada and crisp HD filming, the Blu-ray edition almost conveys the heat of a Veronese summer.
