Description:

Truly contemporary! Chernyakov's "Macbeth" depicts the downfall of a man awakened by ambition, and Verdi's "Macbeth," which caused a stir in Paris, is now available on film. Macbeth" has been widely performed in different settings of the time and place from Shakespeare's original, and in Japan there is the masterpiece "The Spider's Web Castle," a Kurosawa film. Naturally, operas are also often set in contemporary society. In this new production at the Théâtre de la Bastille in Paris, popular director Dimitri Chernyakov has created a truly modern version of Macbeth. The setting is in a small town. At the beginning of the play, the people of the town welcome Macbeth, who is supposed to have been drafted, back home. In this play, the townspeople give Macbeth and Banquo a prophecy. Macbeth and his wife, who are reasonably wealthy but dull-looking, rise to the top of power with ambition and even commit murder, which is quite realistic. In particular, Lady Macbeth's transformation from a rustic dresser to a fashionista is very convincing. Dimitris Tiriakos, a baritone from Rhodes Island, Greece, plays Macbeth. He is a baritone who has emerged rapidly in the past few years, and his popularity as a Verdi baritone has skyrocketed, including Macbeth and Rodrigo in "Don Carlo. He is thin and tall for an opera singer, but has the air of a middle-aged man who is somewhat inadequate, making him a perfect fit for this Macbeth. As Lady Macbeth, Violeta Urmana has become a leading dramatic soprano for both Verdi and Wagner. With her sturdy appearance and strong voice, she is a natural for the role. The Italian tenor Stefano Secco received even more applause than these two. His bright and beautiful voice made Macduff (Macduff), who has little to show, a very prominent figure. Ferruccio Furlanetto, a veteran singer, sings Banco with a strong presence, which greatly enhances the first half of the performance. This production was a co-production with the Novosibirsk State Opera in Russia and was conducted by its music director, Theodor Krentzis, a young conductor born in 1973 who is now attracting much attention in the West. The music here is sharp and clear, and the portrayal of Verdi's emotions is masterful. King International
