I’ll avoid spoilers, but as shown on the cover photo, while Act I takes place in a deep, dark forest, Act II unfolds in a mysterious world set against a pure white stage. This creates an incredibly powerful experience, and the way it seems to be deeply intertwined with the music of *Parsifal* truly brings home Castellucci’s talent and skill. In any case, this is a must-see recording for Wagnerians and opera fans seeking innovative staging. The cast consists mainly of singers who have become familiar faces in recent *Parsifal* productions. Kundry is played by a Swedish alto who is already renowned as a Wagnerian alto. Alongside Erda and Fricka, Kundry is one of Larsson’s signature roles. Gurnemanz is played by the highly experienced Jan-Hendrik Rottling. Rottling is a baritone who left a powerful impression in the title role of Berg’s *Wozzeck* at the New National Theatre. Klingsor is portrayed by the Icelandic bass-baritone Thomas Thomason. He received rave reviews for his performance as Heinrich von Telramund in *Lohengrin* at La Scala’s 2012–2013 season opener, conducted by Barenboim. Only Andrew Richards, who plays Parsifal, is a newcomer to Wagner. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, he has been based in Berlin since 2005 and is a highly accomplished artist active in many theaters across Europe and the United States.
