Dmitri Tcherniakov, on blistering form at present, directs Berg's masterpiece Wozzeck, and the result more than lives up to expectations. The setting is a present-day middle-class apartment block: twelve flats (of which we see one room each) with a large bar on the ground floor. Wozzeck is a salaryman-like tenant, the Captain an army obsessive, the Doctor a mad-scientist type, and Wozzeck is deranged from beginning to end. Tcherniakov depicts with great acuity "the abnormality that lives quietly alongside the everyday", and where a normal staging tends to release its tension after Marie's murder and Wozzeck's drowning, he holds our attention right to the end with a characteristically individual perspective. The performance itself is extraordinary. Teodor Currentzis was born in Greece on 24 February 1972, made his name as chief conductor of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre from 2004 to 2010, and is now music director of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre. This was reportedly the Bolshoi Theatre's first-ever Wozzeck, though you would never guess it: he handles the orchestra superbly, producing music of keen edge and taut tension while unleashing the house's celebrated brass in full power when required. Russian Berg indeed. Wozzeck is sung by Georg Nigl, a baritone born in Vienna in 1972. A star soloist of the Vienna Boys' Choir, he turned to baritone after his voice broke and has built a career centred on baroque and contemporary opera. This is a signature role for him in Vienna and Munich alike, and his portrayal of an utterly ordinary man consumed by madness is masterly. Marie is the American dramatic soprano Mardi Byers, at home in Aida and Tosca and increasingly in Wagner. The remaining roles are taken by Russian singers from the Bolshoi ensemble, some of them - such as Maxim Paster's Captain - astonishingly good. The lengthy curtain-call ovation is included.
