La Fura dels Baus strike again A triumphant Madrid staging of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny - the corrosive wit of Brecht and Weill speaks to our own times Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, staged at the Teatro Real in Madrid in September 2010. Mahagonny is a city founded in the wilderness by three fugitives - Begbick, Fatty and Moses - which prospers by selling freedom and pleasure; but those who come to it are swept up by the worship of money, deaths multiply, and the city finally collapses into riot and ruin. The opera is an expansion into full-scale form of the small-scale piece premiered in 1927 (the so-called "Mahagonny Songspiel"), and of all the collaborations between the visionary Bertolt Brecht and Weill it offers the most scathing satire on modern society. Precisely because of that sting, the 1930 premiere caused a sensation, but in 1933 the Nazis banned performances and for decades the work survived in public memory only through the "Alabama Song". Rediscovered in the 1960s and 1970s, it has grown steadily in popularity, and in recent years - with economies stalling around the world - it has been the subject of a series of notable productions. For this Madrid staging the Spanish theatre collective La Fura dels Baus was invited in, with core members Àlex Ollé and Carlus Padrissa directing. Their production, which addresses head-on the crisis of a contemporary Europe confronted with the collapse of its own prosperity, was a considerable success. The Teatro Real's General Director at the time was none other than Gerard Mortier, and this is exactly the kind of provocative production one would expect from the man who made his mark at the Salzburg Festival and the Paris Opera. The cast is unusually starry for a Weill opera. Begbick is sung by the veteran American soprano Jane Henschel, Moses by the distinguished Jamaican-born bass-baritone Willard White, made a Knight Bachelor in 2004. Jenny is the Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman. The conductor Pablo Heras-Casado was born in Granada, Spain, in 1977, and conducted the NHK Symphony Orchestra in June 2011. A specialist in modern and contemporary repertoire, he is also a frequent presence in the opera pit, making him an ideal choice here.
