Description:

Turandot" at Arena di Verona, directed by Zeffirelli and costumed by Wadaemi, is now in vivid video! And with Japanese subtitles! The live performance of "Turandot" at Arena di Verona in the summer of 2010, featuring the wonderful singing of tenor Salvatore Riccitra, who passed away suddenly just before his visit to Japan. Licitra, born in 1968, was just beginning to reach his prime. His death was too sudden to be regretted. In recent years, Licitra's specialty was Caraph in "Turandot. Licitra's passionate, powerful, yet sweet-voiced Caraph, with its charms, is the ideal candidate for the role.Licitra is often called "the second coming of Pavarotti," but his famous aria, "No one shall sleep," is sung with a delicacy that is different from Pavarotti's dynamic singing. Licitora's spirit of encore in response to the thunderous applause almost brought tears to my eyes. The role of Turandot was played by Maria Greguina, who is today praised as a specialist in this role. Her voice is as powerful as ever, filling the large space of the Arena. Liu is played by Tamar Ivery, a Georgian soprano who sang Desdemona in "Otello" three times in Japan at the Polish National Opera, La Scala in Milan, and the New National Theatre, where she received great acclaim. With a dense and beautiful voice, she sings the sorrow of Liu with great earnestness. Timur is the Brazilian bass Luiz-Octavio Faria. Although not well known, he has a surprisingly fine voice.Conducted by Giuliano Carrera, a veteran Italian opera conductor who has traveled the world. The huge Arena tests a conductor's skill, but it is indeed impressive that the music is so solidly put together that it is hard to believe that it is an open-air opera performance. There have been many visuals of "Turandot" and there have already been other productions directed by Franco Zeffirelli, but this production is exceptional, gorgeously dressed in the huge space of the Arena di Verona. The costumes are by Emi Wada. And it comes with Japanese subtitles, which is a delight! I can confidently recommend this production to first-time "Turandot" audiences as well as to those who would like to see one more production. King International Inc.
