Description:
Featured Release: Pina Bausch’s Only Filmed Work Now Available! A video recording of the dance opera choreographed by Pina Bausch—who passed away in June 2009—is now available. This is the only performance Pina Bausch ever permitted to be filmed for television and released on DVD, recorded in February 2008. This dance opera features an exquisitely beautiful stage where singers and dancers share the stage, with music and dance unfolding simultaneously. The cast is star-studded, both among the singers and the dancers. Mari-Agnès Giroux, an étoile of the Paris Opera, plays Eurydice. Her dancing, clad in a red dress, is elegant and breathtakingly beautiful. Jan Bridard of the Paris Opera dances the role of Orfeo. The role of Amore is played by Mideki Kudo, whom audiences may remember from her appearances in Shiseido commercials. In fact, Gluck himself specified that Orpheus and Eurydice should be accompanied by dancers. Pina Bausch’s staging of this opera-ballet can truly be said to embody Gluck’s ideal. However, Pina Bausch did not limit herself to simply choreographing to the music. Watching Eurydice (Kreiter), singing her lament, alongside Eurydice (Giro), who is making gestures of grief and sorrow, draws the viewer into an extremely mysterious world where it feels as though the soul of the true Eurydice exists between the two. Pina Bausch created a new character born from the chemical reaction that occurs when the “singer” and the “dancer” collide on stage. It is also truly fascinating to see how the characters move during the famous Orfeo aria, “Having Lost Eurydice.” In addition, there is the “Dance of Anger,” a fiercely intense piece centered on three male dancers, and the “Dance of the Spirits,” a fantastical ensemble dance performed by the women—all of which are incredibly beautiful and draw the audience into the world of mythology. Pina Bausch masterfully brings Gluck’s famous mythological world to life through the human body, while simultaneously elevating it into an even more mysterious and beautiful realm. Wonderful music and dance, a beautiful stage, and costumes… This is the only video that allows you to witness the brilliance of Pina Bausch firsthand. Please enjoy this production, which has been hailed as “otherworldly.” [Comment provided by King International]
