Berlioz composed this work on commission from Paganini. While taking care to ensure that the orchestra does not overshadow the solo viola, the piece is filled with dazzling virtuosity that allows Paganini’s technical prowess to shine through in every detail. The story follows the protagonist, Harold, as he embarks on a journey of wandering. While experiencing nature, romance, and various life experiences, he ultimately succumbs to despair, plunges into a bandits’ cave, and meets a tragic end. Zimmerman’s viola playing—at times sobbing, at times soaring from heaven to earth—is truly breathtaking.
