Heinz Spürli, born in Basel in 1940, was himself an outstanding dancer. He became Artistic Director of the Zurich Ballet in 1996 and has earned high acclaim. His first visit to Japan in 2002 caused quite a stir. The cello is played by Claudius Hermann, a cellist with the Zurich Opera House. Speaking of the Zurich Opera House, it is known for its active engagement of early music conductors, led by Anner Bylsma, and its core members are also well-versed in early music performance practices. If you were to underestimate this performance—thinking it’s just “a performance by a cellist from the opera house”—you’d be making a big mistake; it is a compelling performance that is well worth attention for the music alone.
