Description:

A young man, Alberto, laments that he cannot find the woman of his dreams even after searching all over the world. A rich merchant, Don Pomponio, appears before him and boasts that he has placed an ad in the newspaper for his daughter's marriage proposal. Alberto, curious, reads the "conditions of marriage" in the newspaper, but finds them too absurd. Moreover, Don Pomponio's daughter, Lisetta, already has a lover, the innkeeper Filippo. Then along came Anselmo, a traveling merchant, and his daughter, Dralice. Anselmo mistakes Dralice for Lisetta, and they each try to come up with a plan, but misunderstandings lead to misunderstandings, and the story becomes more chaotic. In 1816, Rossini (1792-1968), who had begun work on his opera "Othello," abandoned it for some reason and began work on this opera, "Newspaper," for the Teatro Fiorentini. Rossini himself apparently had considerable difficulty with the script, as it was written in the Neapolitan dialect, which he was not very good at.Besides, both the overture and the arias are often adapted from his own older works, and in this respect the work is difficult to appreciate, but the content is very enjoyable. The singers' light-hearted singing and Mazzonis' production, with its modern costumes and equipment, are a perfect example of the fun of this work. This performance also includes a newly discovered quintet (a piece discovered in a library in Palermo in 2012 and recognized as a true work by American musicologist Philip Gossett) added to the first act, which is the first recording of this part in the world.
