This is the second collection of piano sonatas by Gerhard Frommel (1906-1984), born in Karlsruhe in 1906. He studied music with Hermann Grappner from 1926 to 1928, at the same time attending Hans Pfitzner's master classes and serving as professor of composition at the University of Stuttgart. A lifelong lover of tonal music, he was finally completely forgotten as the era drifted away from the twelve-tone technique and toward atonality. His seven sonatas are considered "autobiographical" in that they all reflect his feelings from time to time. The four sonatas date from 1943 to 1966, and are interesting for their subtle changes in style. The fourth sonata, in the key of E major, has a romantic appearance at first glance, but it also has a Fauré-like fluidity.No. 5 was written in 1951 and rearranged in 1982. Its simple single-movement structure is similar to that of No. 3. The sixth, with its gentle character, and the seventh, with its classical three-movement form, are all distinctive and interesting works, performed by the talented pianist Tatiana Broome, who won the first prize at the Steinway Competition at the age of 12.
