Soile Isokoski, the world’s finest lyric soprano, who feels a deep connection to every song and poem and performs any piece with precision. This time, she performed a collection of French art songs with orchestral accompaniment. The program included two song cycles—Chausson’s *Poèmes d’amour et de la mer* (Poems of Love and the Sea), which demands both delicate expression and Wagnerian grandeur, and Berlioz’s *Une nuit d’été* (A Summer Night), written for his beloved Marie—as well as three songs, including Duparc’s *Invitation au voyage* (Invitation to Travel). These works are too distinct in character to be simply lumped together as “French songs,” yet Isokoski not only sings each with meticulous nuance but also, through her unique expressiveness, invites the listener to contemplate the various forms of love.
