Joachim Raff: Piano Works, Vol. 6 This is the sixth volume in the series of piano works by the Swiss composer Joachim Raff, who has become a familiar figure in this series. This marks the final volume. While following in the stylistic footsteps of his teacher, Franz Liszt, his works—which incorporate a unique flair—resonate more deeply with each listen. This recording focuses on two collections of pieces. The *Six Poems* is an early work from 1845, dedicated to Liszt, who had come to his rescue when he was struggling financially at the time. Within a somewhat charming style that reveals the influence of Mendelssohn and Schumann, a hint of his own originality can be sensed. The *Fantasia* was composed 22 years later, in 1867. It is an ambitious and large-scale work. In contrast, the *Barcarolle*, composed around the same time, has a rather conservative feel. The *Two Pieces*, with their contrasting characters, are also musically rich. “Memories of Venice,” conceived in the 1870s, is based on his experiences in Venice, where he spent a vacation with his family. It is a richly colorful collection of pieces that exemplifies Raff’s most productive period.
