Description:

Hikaru Hayashi’s music finally makes its long-awaited debut in NHK’s “Contemporary Music” archive series! Born in Tokyo in 1931, Hikaru Hayashi dropped out of the composition program at the Tokyo University of the Arts but went on to study under Takatada Otaka, composing and publishing numerous works ranging from orchestral pieces to vocal music. “Give Me Water” (also included on this album), sung in his shocking choral suite “Scenes from the Atomic Bombing,” is known as a piece that no one can ever forget once they’ve heard it. He thoroughly explored the resonance of the Japanese language, promoted the musical works of Kenji Miyazawa, and was also active as the music director of the opera theater “Konnyaku-za” and as a composer. A keen social consciousness lies at the very core of all his works, imbuing his music with boundless sharpness and depth. By including a wide range of genres on this album—from the aforementioned “Mizu o Shitai” to piano sonatas, chamber music, and choral works—it can be said that the album has succeeded in capturing the essence of this extraordinary composer. In particular, his performance of the “Piano Sonata”—which he both composed and performed himself—is simply magnificent; it is a historic recording that demands our full attention and respect. The liner notes for this release were written by Koji Kawasaki, a leading authority on Japanese contemporary music, who provides a detailed analysis ranging from the works’ creative process to their significance.
