Description:
Verdi’s (1813–1901) mid-career masterpiece, *Macbeth*, is based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name. It is said that Verdi, though feeling unwell at the time, was forced to work on several compositions simultaneously and was in a state of turmoil, even taking his frustrations out on the librettist Piave. Although the 1847 premiere was a moderate success, it was panned by some critics, and it seems Verdi did not consider it his finest work. Consequently, 18 years later, he undertook a major revision, refining it to the utmost. This tragedy, which depicts an ambitious couple who seize power only to fall from grace as they become unable to bear the pangs of their conscience, draws not only on the brilliance of Shakespeare’s original play but also benefits from the synergy created by Verdi’s music, which is filled with tension. In 2013–2014, a new production of *Macbeth* at the Teatro Carlo Coccia in Novara emphasized horror and thriller elements to vividly portray human madness. The superficial horror—such as the blood-soaked scenes and the wild dance of the naked witches (be sure to watch the passionate performances of the actresses playing the witches!)—clashes with the inner terror emanating from Macbeth and his wife. These elements compete with one another, creating a deeply moving experience. I was particularly drawn in by Theodosiu’s spine-tingling presence.
