This work is based on the historical events surrounding King Henry VIII of 16th-century England, his second wife Anne Boleyn (Anna Boleyn), and his third wife Jane Seymour (Giovanna Seymour). As you know, the power struggles of the Tudor dynasty were a veritable succession of conspiracies—enough to fill a vast volume on their own. Donizetti composed three operas featuring several women from this historical tapestry as protagonists; these are known as the “Queen Trilogy.” This *Anna Bolena* tells the tragic story of Anna, who is falsely accused of adultery and executed after Henry VIII’s affections shift to his next queen, Giovanna. Though the story offers no redemption, the superb music, rich in dramatic expression, possesses the power to silence every member of the audience. This performance by Europa Galante, led by Fabio Biondi, seems to possess greater simplicity and nuanced expressiveness compared to the typical sound of modern instruments. The beautiful costumes and simple set design will, in fact, serve to stimulate the imagination. One cannot help but marvel at Torbiani’s dramatic singing in the title role, as she masterfully alternates between a “delicate voice and a powerful voice.” Naxos Japan
