The ancient Babylonian queen Semiramide had previously conspired with the Indian prince Assur to poison the former king Nino. Fifteen years later, she changed her mind from Assur to Arsace and plotted to marry Arsace, neglecting Assur. Assur, who thought he could be the next king, is naturally furious, and Arsace has a man named Azeema whom she has her heart set on. While the characters are mixed up in their thoughts, what turns out to be a shocking revelation! Arsace was Semiramide's missing biological son. How will the story end? This opera seria, based on Voltaire's play, is a completely different aspect of the light-hearted Rossini that most people imagine. With its elaborate, ornate arias and massive orchestral parts, it demands unimaginably difficult craft from the singers, and the orchestra must give everything it's got.This performance meets those requirements perfectly. The conductor, the veteran Zedda, is superb, as are the singers, including Papathanasiou, who sings the bewitching Semillermide.
