Raff: Piano Works, Volume 5 My first impression on hearing the opening bars of Volume 1 of this Raff series was of "music that resembles Liszt, yet somehow feels different to the touch". Volume 5 has not changed that impression. Raff was indeed considerably influenced by Liszt, but his music seems to me to carry a shadowed melancholy and a boundless sense of longing. This fifth volume brings together the Grand Sonata, the most important of all Raff's piano works, and the unusual earlier set Leaves and Blossoms. Although the sonata bears an early opus number, it is in fact a late work, laid out on a scale that suggests a symphony. Leaves and Blossoms is a collection of miniatures reminiscent of Schumann; inspired by the "language of flowers" then in vogue, the pieces let us glimpse the fragrant blooms themselves.
