This magnificent organ (82 stops, 6,500 pipes), built in Lyon as part of the 1878 Paris World’s Fair by the renowned organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was modified by Victor Gonzalez in the 1930s. Originally located in the Grand Hall of the Palais de Chaillot in Paris—opposite the Eiffel Tower—it was moved to Lyon in 1977 and underwent further restoration in 2013, restoring it to its former glory. This historic organ is known for having hosted the premieres of numerous masterpieces, and great composers such as Franck, Dupré, and Messiaen have performed on it. It is truly a monumental instrument; in fact, Saint-Saëns’ (1835–1921) masterpieces, “Symphony No. 3” and “The Cypress and the Laurel,” were both premiered in France on this very organ. Please take your time to fully appreciate the magnificent sound of this instrument, which is well-suited to the entire organ repertoire, from Bach to contemporary works. The “Danse Macabre,” performed with the flawless technique of the renowned organist Vincent Varnier, is also a must-hear!
