Dvořák composed this Requiem in 1890 in response to a commission from the Birmingham Music Festival in England. The entire work is brimming with simple, beautiful melodies, and—with a quotation from Bach’s “Mass in B minor,” a composer he deeply admired, appearing at the very beginning—it stands as a monumental masterpiece into which he poured his heart and soul. Although this work is often considered “understated” among requiems from throughout history and across the globe, its quiet emotional depth can only be fully appreciated by listening to it carefully.
