Description:
Neffe (1748–1798) is now known as Beethoven’s first teacher. He was born in 1748 into a long-established family of craftsmen in Chemnitz. He showed great talent from his school days and began studying at the Leipzig Music School in 1771. In 1776, he led an orchestra as a conductor and toured various regions, but due to the orchestra’s financial failure, he lost his job and was subsequently hired by the theater in Bonn as a composer and music director. From then on, he began teaching composition and took on many students, one of whom—a “particularly gifted one”—was none other than Beethoven. Neffe, an ardent fan of the Bach family, seems to have actively incorporated Bach’s *Well-Tempered Clavier* and works by C.P.E. Bach into his students’ curriculum, and Beethoven was undoubtedly influenced by them. The “Variations” included at the end of this album were composed and published by the 12-year-old Beethoven at Neffe’s suggestion, and their refined sound is undoubtedly a legacy of his teacher’s style. This rare two-disc set offers the opportunity to hear Neffe’s own compositions. Naxos Japan
