Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Baghdasaryan (1922-1987) studied piano with Georg Sarayev and composition with Gregory Echiazaryan at the Yerevan Conservatory. In 1963, he was recognized as a person of artistic merit (honorary artist) and a person of national importance. He wrote works in a variety of genres, and this "24 Preludes" is an interesting work with a wide range of expression that clearly expresses his style. Some are lively dances that seem to derive from folk music, others are bursting with toccata-like techniques, and still others are lyrical. Inheriting the worlds of Bach and Chopin and adding new colors, the music flows flexibly, sometimes like the works of Debussy and Scriabin. In the impassioned "Rhapsody," the dialogue between violin and piano is beautiful and filled with nostalgic melodies that are also different from Hungarian music.The sweet, somewhat Russian melody of "Nocturne" will linger in your mind.
