In his youth, Bruckner (1824–1896) made a living as an assistant teacher and organist in a small village. In 1863, at the recommendation of Otto Killer—who was studying orchestration at the time—he composed this Symphony in B minor as a “practical exercise.” Although Bruckner revised his own works many times, he apparently had a particular fondness for this piece; it was never revised, and even when he organized his scores in his final years—during which he attempted to discard works he deemed unnecessary—this piece was reportedly preserved as is. Although his teacher, Kitzler, does not seem to have held this work in high regard, upon actually listening to it, one finds many elements that can be seen as the early seeds of Bruckner’s later artistic spirit; the scherzo movement, in particular, possesses a character that can be described as “pure Bruckner.” This piece has a relatively short playing time for a Bruckner symphony. It might be the perfect introduction to Bruckner. The performance is by the familiar Simone Young. The flexible, lyrical approach she demonstrated in the “No. 0” is in full force here as well. Even the theme in the final movement—which makes one think, “Is this a bit Schumann-esque?” (Is this part uncharacteristic of Bruckner?)—is sung with great care and expression. Naxos Japan
