This 5-CD set features four magnificent vocal works from the ICA Classics' many historical recordings. The Solemn Mass, one of Beethoven's finest works from his later years, is by William Steinberg. Steinberg, born in Cologne, returned to his hometown in his later years to conduct the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra in this masterful expression of Beethoven's spirit. Berlioz's "Requiem" is performed by Mitropoulos, who loved to conduct large works. Enjoy how he cooked up this work, which uses an extraordinary orchestration. The Verdi by Markevich is a triumphant return to Russia. The best vocalists in Russia at the time were deployed for a passionate performance. Rozhestvensky's Lamentations is an early work by Mahler.This large-scale work uses a libretto written by Mahler himself based on Grimm's fairy tale "The Singing Bone," and is usually performed in a revised manuscript with the first part "Märchen in the Woods" deleted, but Rozhestvensky enhances the narrative of this work by using the first draft.
