This “Turangalila Symphony” is the first large-scale orchestral work by the French contemporary composer Olivier Messiaen. It stands out as a uniquely distinctive work not only among Messiaen’s compositions but also among all works composed in the 20th century, and is known for being performed frequently despite its large-scale orchestration. Originally commissioned by S. Koussevitzky, then music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Messiaen began writing the piece and provisionally completed it in 1948; the orchestration was added later. The work consists of ten movements and features “love, death, prayer, and birds”—which Messiaen placed at the very root of his compositional practice throughout his life—are used as motifs. Its sound is also relatively accessible for 20th-century music; nearly half of the movements are tonal, and the key of F-sharp major (the sound of the black keys on the piano), which he loved, is used extensively. The Ondes Martenot and piano play prominent roles here, and the pianist is Angela Hewitt—whom even the renowned Hidekazu Yoshida praised highly. She loves Messiaen as much as she loves Bach, and here, too, she delivers a performance that fully lives up to expectations. Bringing the whole work together with solid precision is Finland’s renowned conductor Hannu Lintu. True to his expertise in contemporary music—including the works of Ligeti—he keeps the massive orchestra completely under control here, crafting a taut, muscular interpretation of Messiaen.
