Description:
Recorded to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Academy of Ancient Music (Ancient Chamber Orchestra), which was founded in 1973, "John Passion" is an excellent, carefully prepared album with the best soloists currently available. It is an unquestionably masterful performance, set at an early tempo, and filled with prayer and love in every part. In this recording, Eger uses the "first draft version" of 1724. Although unfamiliar in places, it is the direct impact and dramatic expressiveness appropriate to this rough-hewn version that makes it suitable for flushing out the true nature of the work (you can listen to two tracks from the different manuscript version online). ) Because it is a supreme masterpiece, there have been many performances of the work, but this Eger disc is a wonderful example of a unique prayer that is different from the great performances of the past.
